Tennis Otago is proud to host the first ever tennis event at the world famous Forsyth Barr Stadium!

On Sunday 17 September from 10.30am – 1pm the kids of Otago are invited to come along to play tennis under the roof of the best sports venue in the country at the Forsyth Barr Stadium Hot Shots Fun Day & Tournament.

The Have A Go Zone for first timers, the Tournament Zone for experienced young players, and the Fun Zone for everyone will make this a great family day out.

Apart from the tennis, there will also be jugglers and street performers, face painters, a bouncy castle, a tennis coconut shy, a mayoral match up featuring Mayor Dave Cull on court 😮, prizes, and food and drink to keep you going!

Southern Series Revival

Players from within the Southern Region can go into the draw to win prizes simply by travelling to ANY TWO Southern Series Tournaments outside their home region. For Otago players, that means a choice of SIX tournaments that they can enter to qualify for the prize draw!

Otago Player Invited to TNZ Junior Masters Finals

Congratulations to Ayoub Ahmad (Eastern Harbour Tennis Club) for qualifying for Tennis NZ’s Junior Masters Finals to be held at Tennis Central Region Inc this Labour Weekend. Ayoub becomes the first Otago resident junior since 2010 (Mitchell Sizemore) to qualify for the Masters Final, as one of the highest placed finishers in the Junior Masters points race.

This year’s Masters Final has been expanded to include a Top 9-16 tier which Ayoub has qualified for. The top 8 or 16 from each age group will be invited to the event by TNZ – Ayoub is the only Otago player and one of only 3 Southern region players to have qualified. Ayoub is thankful for the support provided by Simon Body, the Skeggs Foundation, and the many others that have played a role in his development.

Exciting Changes to 2017 Otago Indoor Open

poster1Tennis Otago is pleased to announce some exciting changes to the 2017 Otago Indoor Open. For the first time in the history of the event, all finals will be played consecutively on a centre “Show Court” flanked by corporate tables and ball kids to showcase the best live tennis action you can find in Otago.

Megan Rogers – winner of the 2017 Lone Star Queenstown Open and runner-up of the 2017 Otago Open, will come back to Dunedin hoping to go one better than in March. The 2017 Otago Men’s Singles Champion Charlie Tomlinson will also feature, as he hunts a calendar year “Otago Slam”.

Tennis Otago Adopts Tecnifibre As Official Ball

Tennis Otago is pleased to announce it has entered into a ball adoption agreement with Tecnifibre NZ under which the Tecnifibre X-ONE ball becomes the official ball of Tennis Otago.

Under the terms of the adoption agreement, all Tennis Otago interclub competitions will now be known as Tecnifibre Interclub.

“Tennis Otago looks forward to developing its partnership with Tecnifibre NZ”, says John Alexander, Tennis Otago Chairperson.

Due to the Vets Queen’s Birthday Tournament, there will be no Winter double tennis played today. This will resume next Saturday, weather permitting, at Logan Park from 1pm.

AGM Date and Call for Board Nominations

The Tennis Otago Incorporated AGM has been scheduled to take place at Logan Park on Thursday 27 July at 7pm.

Please mark this important date in your diary. We would like to see a good turnout at this year’s meeting, which provides all who have a passion for our game in Otago with the opportunity to come together and plan how to take tennis to a new level.

Would you like to help make a difference on the Board of Tennis Otago? Do you know of someone who would make a real difference to tennis in Otago?

We invite written applications from/nominations of people who wish to stand for election as a Board member. These are due by Friday 30 June. Applications must be submitted by email to admin@tennisotago.org and may include a written statement prepared by the candidate outlining their background, experience and other information relevant to their candidature. Tennis Otago will circulate these statements to all clubs, sub-associations and associated bodies with the notice of annual general meeting and agenda.

Winter Tennis Starting Saturday 13th May

What? Winter Doubles Competition. Casual – turn up on the day and you will be assigned a random partner each week that you attend. Matches are handicapped and you will typically play 3-4 doubles matches each week (irrespective of results)

When? Every Saturday 1pm (weather permitting)

Where? Logan Park Tennis Centre

How much? $5 per person per day

Fraser Richardson Appointed New Tennis Otago Operations Manager

Tennis Otago is pleased to announce that Fraser Richardson has been appointed the new Operations Manager for Tennis Otago beginning May 2017. Fraser takes over from Clark Bragg who has been carrying out the role over the last season on a short term contract.
 
Fraser is well known in tennis around Dunedin and has been heavily involved with the Balmacewen Tennis club over the last few years where he is a member and active committee member.
 
We would like to welcome Fraser into the role and thank Clark for carrying out the role in an interim capacity over the last season.
 
All existing contact details for Tennis Otago remain the same. Feel free to make yourselves known to Fraser.

Winter Business House Tennis

Winter-tennisLooking for a tennis fix over winter?

Winter Business House Tennis Tuesday Competition is open for entries again. Starts 2nd May 2017 8pm to 9.40pm.

This competition has been going for over 20 years. Teams of 2 Men and 2 Women – Doubles followed by Mixed.

This year in week 1 we are going to trial the FAST4 format and see if it can be played within the timeframe.

FAST4, is two sets of doubles up to 4, sudden death deuce. 5 point tiebreak at 3-all and if a 3rd set is required it is played as a tiebreak to 5 points. Doubles followed by Mixed Doubles.

If it works well we will complete FAST4 throughout the competition.

Some teams have already entered and some teams are getting organised .

If you haven’t been placed in a team, and keen to play the organising group of Phil Mirfin, Alan Gray and Andrea King will allocate a team for you.

Team fee $150 per team to be paid by 20th May to Tennis Otago. Tennis Balls are supplied throughout the winter competition by Tennis Otago. Entry fee each week is payable to Edgar Centre. After week 1 the draw is available on the Edgar Centre website under Business House tennis.

Player criteria; Minimum age of players this winter is 15 years old or S7 configure band or better.

Entries to Tennis Otago by 28th April by email listing a team captain, best email and cellphone and team members and a team name. If you haven’t got a team send through a message to Tennis Otago and Phil, Alan or Andrea will be in contact.
